The Scout and Guide Associations are well known down through the ages for their fellowship and leadership training. Many a well-known public figure has had their beginning in the Scout or Guide movements.

If your child is aged between six and eight years old why not start them in the Beavers. They run a very varied programme for the sixteen Beavers currently on the register. The Beavers visit places like the public library, the local Fire Station or have visitors over from Hawkwell British Legion or St. Johns Ambulance. The Cub Scout leader visits them regularly so the Beavers can get to know him before they swim up to the Cubs at eight years old.

The Cub Scouts have a steady influx of Beavers and a healthy waiting list; at the moment they have twenty boys on the register. The Cubs have a summer camp once a year and take part in district activities including the cross country and the football competitions. They are lucky within the group that they have a growing number of dedicated leaders, which make scouting as always worthwhile and a pleasure to both the leaders and the cubs themselves, enabling them to do more activities with the boys and aid their development within scouting.

Once the Cubs have reached ten years of age they can join, or transfer to, the Hockley Scout Troop. They have seen their numbers rise steadily to a current troop of fifteen. Scouts are well known for their outdoor events and they recently achieved Third Place in the District Colours competition, which is the net result of all the competitions throughout the year. The Scouts have a number of camps and several outings each year which can include ‘Lasar Quasar’ in the woods, climbing, archery and a number of other activities. The Summer Camp is an ideal opportunity for scouts to brush up on their camping skills.

The girls can join our Brownie Pack at the age of seven. They have a varied programme including craft, cooking, quiz evenings and games. Once a girl has made her Brownie Promise she works towards her Footpath, Roadway and Highway badges. As a pack or individually Brownies are encouraged to complete various interest badges, for example, Artist and Hostess. The Brownies annually attend the Renewal of Promise at Belchamps and Brownie Revels at Guidewoods. The Brownies also have the chance to meet other Brownies at Division Events such as Music Days and Brownie Rambles.

A girl can join a Guide Unit when she is ten years old (she does not need to have been a Brownie). The Guide Unit programme includes Healthy Lifestyles, Global Awareness, Discovery, Skills and Relationships, and Celebrating Diversity. When a girl joins Guides she is given a Personal Organiser containing Guiding information and pages for recording progress. The Guides are encouraged to work in Patrols towards various 'Go for its!' for example, healthy eating and parties. The Guides attend the Renewal of Promise annually at Belchamps. The Guides have the chance to meet other Guides at Division events such as 'Pudding Day', camping weekends and night hikes.
